Godspeed Oscar!

Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho (1907-2012)

It is not the right angle that attracts me.
nor the straight line, tough, inflexible,
created by man.
what attracts me is the free, sensual curve.
the curve I find in the mountains of my country,
in the sinuous course of its rivers,
in the waves of the sea,
in the clouds of the sky,
in the body of the favourite woman.
Of curves is made all the universe.

wood casting

Furniture combining cast aluminium and wood. The negative factor of burnt wood is transformed into aesthetic and emotional value by preservation of the natural form of the tree trunk, within explicit boundaries. The general, squared form intensifies the artificial feeling, and at the same time keeps the memory of the material.

faceture

The FACETURE series consists of handmade faceted vessels, light-shades and table. Each object is produced individually by casting a water-based resin into a simple handmade mould. The mould is then manually manipulated to create the each object's form before each casting, making every piece utterly unique.

basic geometry

Ron Gilad’s new collection of furnishings, Grado°, underlines the designer’s interest in basic geometric shapes. Tables large and small, wardrobes, bookcases, mirrors and shelves play conceptually and materially with revolutionary elements, thereby becoming objects that fascinate and capture our imagination.

rock the boat

You are looking for a nice little mahogany boat to cruise the Riviera? You can't afford a Riva? Then it's time to plan a trip to the eastern part of Germany. Many boats were built in the former German Democratic Republic and one can still find boats for a fair price.

DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM is pleased to present the first solo show featuring uncommissioned works by the Berlin-based photographer Andreas Mühe. Mühe’s oeuvre—the artist works exclusively in analogue photography—includes portraits, interiors, and landscapes. Many motifs in the various genres attest to his critical engagement of the aesthetic representations of political power. That is especially true of the pictures in this exhibition: Mühe shows seven photographs from the series “Obersalzberg,” shots whose picturesque setting has been charged with ideological overtones ever since it served Hitler as a vacation home and second seat of government. Mühe also stages Nazi propaganda materials designed for the indoctrination of children: he transposes enlarged photographs of 1930s and 1940s toy figurines into the installation by printing them on Rhenish-format newsprint, cutting them into fragments, and papering the walls in one of the gallery rooms with them.

bielutine, in the garden of time

Nina and Ely are growing old peacefully in their apartment in Moscow, secluded in the middle of a hundred or so paintings by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Velazquez, Rubens…
With their crow and cats around them, Nina and Ely tell whoever is willing to listen the amazing and epic story of their collection: nobility, love of art, inheritance and resistance to power have, according to them, all played their part in building up this collection and preserving it through the history of Russia in the 20th century.
As their story unfolds, Nina and Ely overdo things somewhat, Nina and Ely get muddled up, Nina and Ely lose touch with reality.
Nina and Ely live in a fiction, a world that they invent every day, a world where it is not possible to distinguish between what is true and what is false.
A world where art and lies have gradually taken over from reality.

a pattern language

Here's how to design or redesign any space you are living or working in - from metropolis to room. Consider what want to happen in the space, and then page through this book. Its radically conservative observations will spark, enhance, organize your best ideas, and a wondrous home, workplace, town will result" -- San Francisco Chronicle.
This classic handbook presents a language which ordinary people can use to express themselves in their own communities or homes, and to better communicate with each other.

reevaluate reality

normal rules don't apply...

Iris van Herpen stands for a reciprocity between craftsmanship and
innovation in technique and materials.
She creates a new direction of couture that combines fine handwork techniques with futuristic digital technology .
Van Herpen forces fashion to the extreme contradiction between beauty and regeneration. It is her unique way to reevaluate reality and to express and underline individuality.
The essence of van Herpen is expressing the character  and emotions of an unique
woman and to extend the shape of the feminine body in detail. She mixes craftsmanship- using old and forgotten techniques- with
innovation and materials inspired on the world to come.
“For me fashion is an expression of art that is very close related to me and to my body. I see it as my expression of identity combined with desire, moods and cultural setting.
In all my work I try to make clear that fashion is an artistic expression, showing and wearing art, and not just a functional and devoid of content or commercial tool. With my work I intend to show that fashion can certainly have an added value to the world,  that it is timeless and that its consumption can be less important then its beginning. Wearing clothing can create a very exciting and imperative form of self-expression. 'Form follows function'  is not a slogan with which I concur. On the contrary, I find that forms complement and change the body and thus the emotion. Movement, so essential to and in the body, is just as important in my work. By bringing form, structure and  materials together in a new manner, I try to suggest and realize optimal tension and movement.”
