the polaroids of cathleen naundorf

Cathleen Naundorf passionately uses large format cameras for her work (Deardorff or Plaubel). The expensive Polaroid films with the format 4 x 5 und 8 x 10 inches, many of which are out of production, are unique items the photographer uses as a homage to the exceptionality of the haute couture dresses.

w. eugene smith - monograph

American photographer W. Eugene Smith (1918 – 1978) revolutionized the photo-essay form with the works he published in Life magazine between 1948 and 1956. This monograph reproduces images from six of his classic sequences: "Country Doctor", which portrays the selfless and sometimes frustrating work of a doctor in rural America; "Spanish Village", the most powerful photographic study of 1950s Spain; "Nurse Midwife", which examines the life of a black woman in the American south; "A Man of Mercy", which documents Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s humanitarian work in Africa; "Minamata", a photo-essay recording the effects caused by a mercury spill in a region inhabited by Japanese fishermen, and Pittsburgh, Smith’s first freelance assignment.
Writings by W. Eugene Smith, clarifying his field techniques and guiding principles, are included here alongside the tale of his most praised photograph, "A Walk to a Paradise Garden", and an essay on Spain in the 1950s, the setting for his Spanish Village essay.

Willem Jan Neutelings, quoted from this book: "The Antwerp-based photographer Jan Kempenaers undertook a laborious trek through the Balkans in order to photograph a series of these mysterious objects. He captures the Spomeniks in the misty mountain landscape at sundown. Looking at the photographs one must admit to a certain embarrassment. We see the powerful beauty of the monumental sculptures and we catch ourselves forgetting the victims in whose name they were built. This is in no way a reproach to the photographer, but rather attests to the strength of the images. After all, Kempenaers did not set out as a documentary photographer, but first and foremost as an artist seeking to create a new image. An image so powerful that it engulfs the viewer. He allows the viewer to enjoy the melancholy beauty of the Spomeniks, but in so doing, forces us to take a position on a social issue."
